UL or not UL that is the question?

I stopped into the supply house the other day and ask for 3/4" seal tight. The counter help asked me if I wanted the UL approved or non UL approved?? I was to say the least surprised that I had a choice. I said who buys the non UL approved type... he said well if your not getting it inspected then the non UL type will be fine?!!!!? After I composed myself and walked out with the UL approved type I had to ask myself how many times have I installed a non UL approved product. I would be very upset to have an inspector ding me on installing something like that. I guess I will be looking a little closer at things.

Okay, i'll bite, does something have to be UL listed to be used in the electrical field?

LFMC has to be listed.

350.6 Listing Requirements.
LFMC and associated fittings shall be listed.

We had stuff like that at work not too long ago. I asked about it on this forum.

Said it right on the box... non-UL . Nobody who posted a reply seemed to think you could use it for anything, yet they make it.

Somebody's gotta be using it. They wouldn't make bigger hammers, or non-UL sealtite, if nobody used them.

LFMC was defined as being a listed raceway in the 99 NEC, and I believe this was the first mention of it being listed

Jim, if that is the case why is LFNC required to be listed?

I think that there is more than just the EGC issue...I believe that there is also a crush resistance standard that non-listed product does not meet.
In my area 2 of the 3 local supply houses only stock the non-listed product. Some contractors will be getting a surprise as we have a new electrical inspector and this is one of the things he will be looking for.

The point is, all raceways are required to be listed.

There is no doubt that LFMC used in NEC covered situations needs to be listed, it is very clear in article 350.

I remember several years back (easily in the 1990's), the uproar that occurred when local electricians found out that there was LFMC built to JIC standards for OEMS/industrial machinery and different UL listed stuff for NEC applications.
 
The listed lfmc has a copper wire running the length of the sealtight making a continuous bond. The non listed doesn't. At least that is the difference at the supplier I checked at last week.
