Hello all,

What's your understanding about UL vs UR motors ? I believe UL motors are tested by UL and went through extensive test. UR, on the other hand, is "recognized", not tested. And some motors don't get UL tested and labeled because they are "general purpose" motor types.

Regards,
Stan

My understanding is that a UR motor is recognized by UL as a component of a piece of equipment that is UL listed and is only recognized and tested as a component of that equipment where as a UL motor is listed for general use stand alone application.

This may come as something of a surprise; but, unless it was intended for use in hazardous locations (UL Category Codes PTDR, PUCJ, PTHE) you have never seen a "UL" motor (UL Category Code PRGY).

Augie's explanation about "Recognized Component" motors (symbol - backward UR) is correct.

NEMA motors are not submitted to UL (or any other NRTL) for "General Purpose" or, as the NRTL's call it, "Ordinary Locations."

Mr. Alexander,
Most interesting. I think you have taught us that previously. Hopefully my old brain will remember this time.

I talked with a U.L. rep today that says U.L. does now offer a listing for motors for general purpose applications.
