Do you tend to mount this closer to the wall so it lights up the wall? I would think like 4" off the back wall. Or is it better to mount the LED light in the center of the cabinet so you light up the counter top below evenly. Curious how you all do it.

I put the tape about an inch from the cabinet face, so it's just about centered over the counter top.

Side note: I have found that a single diagonal strip works well under a corner upper cabinet.

I've used WAC led tape light with a 1 inch angle mount and cover that allows it to attach at a 45 at the cabinet front overhang. It gives a full lighting of the countertop work area and wall without any visible lighting source from the room. It also has a dimmable driver that cost a little more if you really want dimming.

Put the strip as close as you can to the front so that your shadow line is exactly at the front edge of the countertop. That way you aren't lighting the floor

Here's a tip (trick) for perfect placement...

Use a straight edge
Position it to touch the front edge of the countertop, the bottom edge of the face frame and the bottom of the cabinet box. That's the placement of the strip.

It's not the same exact distance from the front on every kitchen.

I installed them for my daughter when she remodeled her kitchen. The countertops were not installed yet, but I knew the thickness and overhang dimensions. I was there when the countertop guys came for their install. One of them tried to tell me that the lights were installed wrong - they should be centered front to back on the cabinets. I explained what I did and he just mumbled something to the effect “that’ll never work….”

They came out perfect.

If you happen to be sitting at a table or have portion of counter where you have seating - the light strip will be less directly visible if mounted near the front of the cabinet in most instances as well.

I always put it in aluminum channel
With diffuser cover I would imagine.

I haven't done that in residential kitchens, did do it in a bar once, light strip under the bar on customer side, I knew before even starting this would need to be something at least a little bit tamper resistant and exposed tape light would not last long with people messing with it while sitting there.

For sure. I buy it in 2 meter lengths.
