Undercabinet Lights

Would it be permissable per NEC 2005 to use a 12/2 stranded UL listed NEC type CL2 cable to feed undercabinet lights in a dwelling. This could be run through the walls without violating 411.4A. This would make connections much easier than 12/2 romex.

You will need to reference Table 11(A) in Chapter 9.
Read FPN #2 that follows 725.41(A).

Your source and load side circuit are restricted to a certain extent, and you should be aware of this.

The new requirement in 411.4(A)(2) is not wholesale permission to use those wiring methods.

I have had a discussion or 2 with my AHJ and the answer is that CL2 does not follow the approved wiring methods of article 300; now if you were to sleeve the CL2 inside some smurf tube or flex then you should be fine because the smurf tube is approved. I use the 12/2 NMB and have enough stubbed out to go past the front of the cabinet because of maneuverability for the cabinet installation.

If you want to use a Class 2 cable, you have to have a Class 2 source. This is done all the time for the aisle lighting in theaters...they require using a Class 2 system due to the expsed connections (no jbox).

For LV lighting, you are limited to 5A @12V, which gives you 60 watts per run. This is not much, which is why most LV installs go for a Ch 3 method. Note that even with a Ch 3 wiring method, you are limted to 25A (300W/12V & 600W/24V).

You can order LV transformers with a bunch of 5A breakers to comply with the class 2 source. They also make boxes that take a 300W feed from a transformer and have 5A breakers to break out to your individual homeruns. See Celestial Lighting.

The Class 2 source has to be a listed source. Is this a listed Class 2 source or are you trying to get to the rating by using the fuses?
