We plan to install a polymer pull box in a conduit run for powering a well pump. The cable will be 4-#12Cu jacketed for 480V. Is anyone aware of an NEC requirement to have the cable in conduit or enclosure INSIDE the pull box? NEC 300-14(n) seems to imply that such enclosures inside pull boxes are not required. So does NEC 110-12(b).

If it is an open bottom pull box it is not a listed enclosure.

You would need direct burial cable or a J box in the hand hole.

The NEC does not specifically allow or prohibit the wiring method you propose. Open bottom handholes are commonly used in traffic signal and roaway lighting applications, and some code rules for them will be added to the 2005 NEC, including adding open bottom handholes to the scope of article 314.
Your method would require the pump cable to be listed for direct burial, IMO. In fact washington state has had a state code rule for some time that allows open bottom handholes but direct burial rated wire or cable must be used.
