underground diesel storage tank grounding

Does anybody know why is required grounding of underground storage tank and where to find requirements?

Maybe 514-16 of the NEC? You may also want to see NFPA 30, Flammable and combustable liquids code.

I notice in NFPA 30 there is a lot of reference to prevention of corrosion by cathodic protection. That may have some effect on the grounding.

I would think that the grounding requirements would be based on the tank manufacturer and the function of the tank. If the tank had a electric pump then I'm sure there are grounding jumpers already included in between the tank and pump to prevent static.

There is an organization called "Steel Tank Institute" for technology and research. I found a comment within their installation guide that states "Steel tanks in contact with the earth should not use copper grounding".
