Was wondering if someone could help me out with an UG temporary service.............Looking to install temp service for a new house in Bergen County NJ and O & R gave me there spec sheet for the post, ground rod, depths and type of lumber but no direction on what type of wire to use. They show the tail after using the conduit 12" below grade but then they show a loose tail for 24" next to the utility transformer and said to hand dig the soil to expose the hand hole to the vault.

what type wire for UG service temp

I can beleive this post had so many view and no replies. Someone must have done an underground temp

Is the underground wiring going to run in conduit or direct burial?
Conduit-THHN or THWN or aluminum wire rated for wet locations.
Direct Burial- direct burial service feeder.

Ok thank you, the utility O & R finally got back to me because they run in conduit to 12" depth and then want a 12' tail left near the transformer . They gave me for 30A TEMP
10/3wGrnd UF cable with black, red, white insulated conductor or direct burial aluminum 8/3wGrnd UF or USE with black, red and white insulated conductor....Soon as i wrote them a check for $697.00 the gave me an answer

Welcome to the world of O&R. If this is your first experience with them be prepared for many more like this. I have to admit, they've gotten better over the past few years but when Con Ed originally bought the company they became some of the most unreasonable people to deal with. Their installation manual is not as complete as PSE&G and leaves room to be desired. IMHO, find out who their inspector is for the area you're working in and become friendly with him/her. Stay in communication with him/her via e-mail, fax or any other means and try to follow all their stupid rules to the best of your ability and it will go a lot smoother than if you didn't.

Also, you'll need to have all their service application and inspection forms on hand and submit them for each job. You can get them from their office on Rt 17 in Mahwah. If you can't get there send me a PM and I'll forward them to you.
