Underground Enclosure (Quazite) - Open or Solid Bottom?

I'd like to hear people's thoughts on specifying open vs solid bottom underground enclosures.

Does it depend on location (ie grass, sand, pavement, etc)?
Does it depend on climate where frost heave is a concern?
Does it depend on size?

I have no issue with open bottom. At least the enclosure doesn't stay full of water.

If an open bottom is used is anything put at the bottom? I assume it’s not just earth at the bottom.

Pea gravel is what I've used.

The few I've done, I've had no reported issues. I always expected mice, but hadn't experienced those either.
