We recently ran into a situation. We only had 14" of space cut through concrete for digging a trench to lay electrical & gas runs. After contacting local gas and electrical inspector's; both electrical and gas, we had many different answers. The best answer i got was they must be 12" apart.

That being said, I went on to ask the question: If a 14" wide trench is dug, and the gas line and electrical line are pinned to the farthest outer corners, then back filled; would this be considered 12" apart? Well again I got many different answers.

If any one knows the answer and article, it would be greatly appreciated.

Only partially tongue in cheek, what if you dig two 2" trenches, one at each side of the concrete cut, and put electrical and gas into separate trenches?

There is no NEC article. Gas company often has their own set of regs.

Once the dirt is back in the big ditch you have two pipes 14" apart, no?
You have two pipes whose outer edges are 14" apart. You may have only 12" center to center and less than 12" between the near edges of the pipes.
Like the OP, I would like to know which dimension is called out in the rule.
