This is in regard to Art. 680.10 Underground Wiring Location. A homeowner wants to put a recpt. on the far side of a built-in pool for conveince. This will not be for pool equipment.
A nonmetallic conduit put in the same hole used to install the pool will be used but the conduit will only be 3.5 feet horizontally from the pool walls. (I can dig another trench 40 feet long, 18 inches deep at 5 foot horizontally or 1.5 feet from the 3.5 above) Checked with the AHJ and he said as long as the recpt. was Within 10-20 feet of the pool edge when it came out of the groung the install is ok per NEC.
How do guys on this forum interpet this requirement?

Thanks , Mike (Romeo, Mich.) :)

If the AHJ say's it is ok then I would guess you could do it.
My interpretation (and it seems pretty plain) however is that since this is not for pool equipment and you have the room then you must run the conduit at 5 ft from the pool wall. I don't know what the AHJ is seeeing that allows less. But then again I can't see the
circumstances.

Re: Underground pool wiring

It is interesting to me that Rule 351C1, in the NESC says, cable should not be installed within 5 feet of a pool or its equipment. If 5 feet can?t be obtained, conduit or supplemental protection shall be provided. In other words, we can install our service lateral under a pool if it is in a raceway. :D

Re: Underground pool wiring

Charlie,
Your 7:49pm post was exactly my thought. The recpt would be used for assoc. swimming pool convienience/equipment, so the AHJ must feel the same way. Just had to ask the opinions of this forum.
Thanks, MJC :D
