I have to find the open on an underground 480/3ph UF cable that feeds 7-1000w hps parking lot lights. Is there a tool that for this. I wanted to replace the run of UF with conduitand #6 but my supervisor dosen't want to trench the lawn. The run is aprox 125-150ft.So if any one knows where,in southern CT I can rent, buy,or a company that dose fault testing let me know.

The UF will not break without help. Find out if there has been any excavation going on, near the cable path.

Is this 480 or 277?

Several years ago I purchased a PULSER GROUND FAULT LOCATOR from my local wholsaler. It works great, it will put you exactly over the top of the fault, but gives no indication of depth. It is manufactured by PROGRESSIVE ELECTRONICS INC.

I hate to point out the obvious, but UF is supposed to be buried even deeper than conduit. How doe you run UF without trenching?

Otherwise, in a shallow install, an open wire might be revealed by dead spots in the vegetation.

Re: underground wiring

what you are looking for is a time domain reflectometer. [tdm] this is a meter that pings the wire and times the reflected signal. opens, shorts, etc. are indicated along with the distance from the ping end to the problem.

some are quite affordable. the fancy graphing display models can get quite pricey.

any telecom supplier should be able to give you some suggestions.
