680.26(B)(5) states, Bonding conductor must be secured within or under the perimeter surface 4 to 6 inches below the sub-grade. I am looking at a hot tub mounted on a 18" slab, does the conductor need to be 4 to 6 inches below the surface of the of the slab or is 4 to 6 inches under the slab OK?

As defined,sub-grade is a surface of earth or rock leveled off to receive a foundation, so it seem that under the slab would meet code, but it would put the bonding conductor about 24 inches from the surface pepole are standing on and it makes me wonder if the bonding would still be effective.

18" Slab??? If that's the case I'm sure there is steel in it that must be bonded

Thats what I thought also, but it was done by the homeowner and I don't think there is any steel,I am looking into that now.I wonder what is going to hold that slab together if there is none?

Hey Romeo...

I would interpret the rule to mean either the #8 can be installed in the concrete or if in the base material below the concrete in must be 4-6inchs down...

I would think that the #8 in the sub grade would do a better job of masking the stray voltage if it were present...

I also think that the 2005 method with the grid pattern would be more effective than the 2008 method of a single #8 at 18-24inches from the pool. But the 2008 method is less $$$...
