Hi again,

I have a pentair pool panel that the pool guy ran a 1" sch. 40 pvc pipe from to the forming shell for the wet niche light. I planned on running a #8 THHN bonding wire to the forming shell and seal it with scotchkote. I believe I see 2 violations with this approach. (correct me if I'm wrong please and point out others)

1) The 1" PCV pipe needs to be sch. 80
2) A junction box with threaded conduit entries needs to be a min. of 4' away from the edge of the pool and 8 in. above the grade.

Or is the pentair pool panel listed for making the splice onto the GFI circuit?

I see nothing in your description that keeps me from thinking you need to terminate the wet niche conduit into a listed pool j box.

This is where I need help, I read 680.23 (1) (2) and I see that it says that " conduit shall be installed from the forming shell to a junction box or other enclosure conforming to the requirements of 680.24" I would think that a Pentair pool panel meets the requirements. I don't know what to do, should I leave it or put a deck box in? Some other pool personnel are telling the GC it needs a deck box.

1-Why SCH 80?
2-The JB can have non-metallic hubs for PVC raceways.

You're right, the pvc doesn't have to be sch. 80.
I'm still confused however if the pentair pool panel meets the requirements of 680.24 to make the necessary splice for the pool light. I don't see a problem with it but after thinking about it more and reading the section. I just don't know if it's listed for such

I believe to be line voltage LED

I've never seen an LED pool light with the driver/transformer built into the light. They usually require a transformer that is mounted remotely from the lights. The transformer either comes in a pool rated encloser or you have to provide one rated for pools.

I don't think the Pentair panel is anything other than a 3R panel with maybe some timers for the equipment and breakers. I don't think it would qualify as a pool junction box. But if the lights are low voltage LED, they normally come with a transformer or you provide one. They don't require the same pool junction box as would be required for line voltage lights.

I just found out the LED is line voltage, so I that settles it. I'll need a deck box.

Thanks for all your help. I don't do a lot of pool work, but when I do I want to make sure I do it right.

Scotchkote? Can you still get it?
Is that a "listed potting compound"?

Yes, scotchkote has been reformulated and is available again. No, it's not a listed potting compound. I found and purchased a listed potting compound 3M's "wet niche potting kit" from the electrical supply house. $35
