I am having a hard time finding the answer to whether you can run three 6 awg thhn black conductors and re identify them with an approved method or if I would need to run three that are factory colored red, black, and blue. Can anyone please help and provide a code reference? Thanks.

You might add 210.5 (C) , 200.6, and 250.119 to that research.
After checking those along with Dave's, you will know 95% of the Code conductor ID requirements.
You may find you don't even need the tape.
