I work at a hospital in the maintenance department. I'm seeing something done that concerns me. Not sure how valid my concerns are.
I'm seeing medical staff place a small cord connected UPS between an isolated power source and its intended load. Of course we aren't aware this is being done until someone reports a problem. Giving that the ripple current is being rejected to ground by DC filter caps in the UPS they are going to cause an alarm if enough of them are used. I'll assume that can be dealt with by using a UPS with a real isolation transformer in it.
My larger concern is that the output of a UPS wouldn't be a balanced isolated source (60VAC-0-60VAC) and that patient safety would be compromised. Am I right to be concerned?
