What, if any code requirements are there for replacing switches when there is no equipment ground present?

Non metallic wall plates?
Nylon screws?

Thanks

You can replace a non grounding switch with a grounding style w/ no egc present- 404.9(B) exception.

As for when non metallic screws are needed- Here is an excerpt (from 404.9 Exception #1 to (B) ) :

......A snap switch wired under the provisions of this exception and located within 2.5 m(8 ft) vertically or 1.5 m (5 ft) horizontally of ground or exposed grounded metal objects shall be provided with a faceplate of nonconducting noncombustible material with nonmetallic attachment screws, unless the switch mounting strap or yoke is non metallic or the circuit is protected by a ground fault circuit interrupter."

Does anyone make those anymore? I remember the Slater plastic switches of the early 90s.

Ever wonder just how likely the yoke on a typical snap switch in a non metallic box is to become energized?

IDK if they make those anymore or not.

There is the Leviton cheetah stuff, which I'm pretty sure would be legal for this, but horribly impractical- that would either necessitate replacing the box or you would have to "alter" (then maybe have 110.3(B) issues arise) the cheetah to make it work with existing box.:happyno:

Much simpler to just install standard sw into existing, use nm FP/screws or, if the customers feelin' fancy, screwless plates.
