Uni-strut Mounted Electrical Equipment

Looking to mount some electrical equipment (panels, small xfmr) outside on a uni-strut structure. Is there any code that requires me to get structural loading calculations to make sure the uni-strut structure will hold the weight of the electrical equipment?

BTW, I am in Florida. So FBC does apply. Thanks.

Unistrut does have info on what it can be loaded to. I would think that would be a first step.

I'm sure it does but I have never checked. Does anybody? I think of it like 2x4 lumber; just use it when it fits the need.

Download their design manual, it has all you need and more about what loads various elements can handle. For the basic P1000 strut, it can handle a maximum uniform load at 36" of 1130 lbs. for a single member.

Yes, technically speaking. It's up to the bldg dept where you are doing the work to dictate what level of detail you need. Give them a call, ask for the electrical plans examiner, and tell them how much equipment it is, etc. and ask how much detail they need on structural drawings & if it needs to be signed by a PE for structural.

I doubt you exceeded any load bearing limitations in the pictured install with exception of maybe high wind forces. Now hang a 500 pound transformer on the back side of your structure and you may need to change some things.

The uprights aren't actually unistrut. They are structural steel tubing like they build metal carports out of.
