I would think this would be more of a mfg listing issue and not really covered by the NEC. If the mfg listed the union/erickson for burial you're good to go.

Back to the OP question. Arlington link states 'concrete tite' & 'liquid tite'.
Seems like I've buried quite a few over the years too. A discussion a while back went something like this:
"couplings" can be buried; "fittings" cannot be buried. This was based on 'definitions'. Arlington calls them 'couplings', so..110.3 (b) stretched?

On a serious note; a 3 piece coupling is a coupling. No access should be required, as a 'regular coupling' does not require access. End of debate.
