I was told that the NEC spells out the minimum length for unistrut if it is utilized as a method of support. I cannot find this specification. Is this true?

Re: unistrut support length

Do not recall if the NEC has a requirement, but you should never exceed 6 feet. In my industry it is 5 feet on center, and no cantilever more than 12 inches.

Re: unistrut support length

For us it all depends on the strut we chose.

5/8", 1 7/8" , 3" or Double strut. (2 - 1 7/8" struts riveted back to back from the factory)

It also depends on the load we have to carry, you can get load ratings from the manufactures.

I will be honest we exceed 5' quite often, many of the buildings we work have truss 6' apart or I beams closer to 10' apart.

All you will find in the NEC is something along the line of securely supported.

Re: unistrut support length

A catalog from a strut mfg will have information on the allowed loading. The span and load depends on the type of strut used.

Re: unistrut support length

No, nothing in the NEC even mentions strut systems.

Tom is correct, the manufacturer's catalog will have the information you require. Simply saying that the limit is 6 feet is totally meaningless because there are many different sizes and types of struts as well as support and construction methods.

Strut systems are used for a great many things, I've seen entire warehouses utilize this stuff for multi level storage.

As a kid I had a Go Cart made of strut. :D

Joints were welded, no spring nuts. :D

Dad was a plumber, you use what is available.
