For the purpose of evaluating 422.34

422.34 Unit Switch(es) as Disconnecting Means.
A unit switch(es) with a marked-off position that is a part of an appliance and disconnects all ungrounded conductors shall be permitted as the disconnecting means required by this article where other means for disconnection are provided in the following types of occupancies.
Is the dishwashers' selector switch on the front panel (pots and pans, normal, rinse, off, etc...) considered to be a unit switch?

Re: Unit Switch

Charlie I have had this same dissucion with a local AHJ that wanted a breaker lock out for a cord connected D/W.That was`nt enough as he saw it but since a panel had to be removed to access an appliance cord he wanted a lock out.

Re: Unit Switch

Interpretation of the NEC is a problem. different people read it different ways and some people do not believe it says what it says.

The "experts" (the people who are on the code making panel that cover this question), UL, the NFPA people, and the IAEI all teach that a unit switch is the switch on the face of the appliance. If it is marked with an "off" position, it is the disconnecting means for that appliance. :D
