Just got a phone call from a potential customer who responded to a print ad that I have in a regional monthly paper (1st problem)

The caller wanted to know if I could install a generator so that they could run their electric stove/oven combination, fridge and their well and septic since they are on an elevated sand mound system with a effluent pump.

During our first power outage this year they were without power for a week and had to move into a shelter. They said they NEVER want to go through that again.

I told them this was possible but the fact that they want the stove to work will bump up the size of the generator.

I went through some options for ATS or manual, etc, blah and if they wanted anything else such as heat but that was all they wanted.

She of course wanted a price over the phone for the generator and everyting else needed and I said I have to come out and see what the rating was of all of the equipment plus see the house so I know what I have to work around.

She pressed for a ballpark and I said it can range anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000, I don't know because I really need to see the house.

She said "how much?" and I said the price for what you want will start at about $5,000. and she said she only wanted to spend.............................................................................................................................................................................................................................NO more than a thousand bucks for the complete package!

Don't worry about it, how would she have any idea whatsoever how much it would cost.

She may have walked through home depot and saw generators for $500 bucks but she would have no clue that 5 KW will not run much or the fact there are transfer switches to buy and that you need to make money.

well, there is a package just for her.....

a home desperate generator, about $699... 2 extension cords...
a 5 gallon can of gas...

and don't forget to fill that gas can up... that rounds it up to $1,000

That's just about right. The first thing to do with a customer is find out how much money they can afford to spend and explain what they can hope to get for that kind of money.

Nothing wrong with a $699 generator if that is what you can afford to spend. You can have a light, watch TV and make coffee ( better than nothing).

Then you explain what a real back-up generator will cost and let them compare prices.

A neighbor of mine went to buy a car a few years ago. He had an advertisment for a car at around 14K. He left the lot driving a car at around 28K and came home wondering how that happened.

Most people don't want to spend a lot of money but they end up doing it anyway.

i did a house a couple of years ago where the customer wanted a generator; we discussed what he wanted to run and determined a 20kw would suit his needs. i don't remember the exact cost, but it was somewhere around $12k i'm sure. anyway, when it came time to set the generator, the customer was furious that lowe's was selling generators for less than $1k and mine was $12k. I tried to explain they were two different machines and the one at lowe's wouldn't run all his equipment. his response; "what if i buy two?" :D I'm assuming that's what he did, because the only thing he paid for was the transfer switch i installed and canceled the generator install.

That must have been lovely when he bought the two sets and hooked them up together........:D

Some people have no clue as to what certain things cost. I know I don't know the cost of everything in the world. If I need or am interested in something I will do my research. If it turns out to be alot of money Oh well......now I know. It sounds like she didn't have a clue and asking you for a ballpark figure was her attempt at research. I know it's easy nowadays to google stuff but for some folks calling and asking a professional is the way they do it. We run into it all the time. It's part of having your number in the phone book, paper, website, etc.....

At least you didn't waste your time making the trip to her house.
