we are replacing all receptacles in an apt bldg (circa 60)...obviously no ground wire exists of these years. A GEC exists at panel. If a GFCI is installed, what of this ground, and moreso, would all these outlets need updated to include a ground wire, including the subpanels in each of the 6 units. tnx

Also I am not sure what you mean by ground wire? This is not a code term (look at it this way-can I look up the definition in art 100? Knowing the definition tells us what rules apply)

I'm a bit confused , do the branch circuits have an equipment grounding conductor?

The sub panels are fed with a three wire feed , 2 hots and a grounded conductor and this also serves to bond the equipment??
 
If these were built in the 60's what is the wiring method? Around here an apartment house built around then would have been done in rigid conduit which can serve as the EGC.
