I updated my NEC History Matrix this morning to include the 2017 NEC.

I've taken various Code references I've researched the history of and made an Excel spreadsheet out of where, in older NECs, the reference is.
Wow this is impressive.
What do you use it for teaching inspections?

It looks quite useful for assessing older buildings so see if they meet to "the minimum code in effect at the time of construction".
I had to trace when 240.24(E) was enacted, you could add that one in, it think it was 1990. Had an existing panel (loadcenter) in a (quite large) bathroom, in a dwelling. We needed to refeed it. Had to dig out old codes to find out if it was legal when the house was originally built.
I probably have a old thread about it here somewhere.
It sure looks like a lot of work, but i'm not quite sure how to read it :(

Say you need to determine if something thats expensive to move is "grandfathered" at an older building and you can research what year it was built by tax records or old permits.
For example is a two prong laundry receptacle grandfathered in a home built in the 1951? Go the the column with the requirement 406.4(A) in this case .
Follow it down to the year the building was built and bingo, (not grandfathered in this case).
You do need to know your jurisdictions NEC adoption dates and amendments though.

Thx guys

I'm starting to get it, so the 'extinct' is presumably movement via the techincal correlation committe (sp) to other areas....?

No. If it migrated to a different area in the code, the number would merely change. Extinct means the requirement no longer exists.

You'll still need them to look things up.
That's an impressive collection if you have all the ones in blue.
As a side note I don't know if they actually published a 1958 book?
I am guessing its a supplement.
I believe I have the '56 and the '59 that would be odd if they printed them a year apart. It be interesting to see a '58 code book.

They're all listed in the front of your code book.
