The existing electrical connection to the 40+ year old fire pump is to an MCC. This MCC is fed from a nearby panelboard which is fed from the central distribution point which is backed up by a standby generator.

The fire pump and controller are to be replaced and the cabling to it is also to be upgraded.

However, by upgrading the above mentioned equipment, it is likely that compliance to all updated applicable codes is necessary.

As the system is backed up by a standby generator, it is deemed a reliable source. However, the power continuity in my opinion is somewhat questionable due to the possible downstream trip point.

Given the information and bearing in mind that the facility is a federal prison, what would you do in best practise?

Directly replace existing infrastructure or advise the client that a direct connection either to the main bus or separate utility line to ensure power continuity is critical.

Risk and liability are key factors in any decision.

Would appreciate any feedack.

...your from Calgary so I'm not sure how things work up there. In the states, most contractors would require stamped approved drawings from an electrical engineer, with PE license. Thats the only way I've seen them done.
