Existing hotel is undergoing a renovation. The existing main switch is fused at 2000A. It has been discovered that there are only 4 parallel feeds of 4 #500kcmil. We are going to upgrade to 5 parallel feeders of 600kcmil. The building is fed from a pad mount transformer located adjacent to the main electrical room. the conduits enter the electric room approx 24" AFF. Has anybody had experience in upgrading an exisitng service? Comments on difficulty or alternative approach? the exsting switchboard is also being replaced, it will be in the same location as the existing feeder conduits are installed in the slab. Thanks

If the service point happens to be at the lugs of the service gear those conductors do not have to meet the NEC rules but may well be acceptable to the power company.

Unless you want to change this it might be worth checking into.

Same idea as the power company using 4 aluminum for a 200 amp service.

I thought from the load side of the XFMR is where the NEC starts from? If I understand Iwire right, the service feeder maybe under rated if the power company approves?

It could be or it may not be.

Each area determines these issues, the areas utility company or utility commission would probably be the best bet for finding where the 'official' service point is.

If the electrical contractor or owner of site is providing the conductors they are to sized by the NEC
