I came across an industrial UPS (uninterruptible power supply) with an NEMA N5/20 plug on its power cord. Of course, receptacles to except the N5/20 are not commonly found in the home or office. The UPS output receptacles feature 4 N5/15?s and 2 N5/20?s.

The specs on the UPS say its AC input is 120v at 16amps. I?d expect that this current rating of 16 amps is at the UPS collective maximum load of 2100 VA on all output receptacles. If used for desktop PCs, that?s far beyond the power needs of even three PCs and monitors.

Is there any reason why I shouldn?t swap the N5/20 plug on the power cord for a common N5/15 15amp plug? If the AC supply circuit is breaker protected at 15 amps, it seems I would be protected against over-current. Of course it will function. I'm asking is it safe?

Re: UPS with N5-20 Plug

You can not reduce the cord cap rating and still be able to comply with 110.3(B).

You may be able to replace the receptacle in the wall with a NEMA5-20R.
