The rules in 645 are a giant exception to the NEC but you must follow all the rules.
So typically UPSs can go anywhere, like the one by my feet,
 
I'm not sure what the size might be, but at some point you're going to worry about the amount of H2 being generated during recharge.
 
The batteries for a UPS are almost certain to be sealed (Valve Regulated Lead Acid = VRLA). That means no H2 unless badly abused

Flooded Lead Acid (FLA) if used would most likely be in a specialized battery room or area.

Not really an issue with SLA batteries that UPS use under 10 Kva. If you use a large bank of FLA then you might have issues with ventilation and spill containment, but otherwise no problem. If this is a 10 Kva or smaller unit using SLA batteries put it anywhere you want. You can put in in your living room or kitchen.
