Upsizing the grounding conductor

Okay, I read it in Article 250 that if the conductors are upsized, so is the ground wire. 20 amp circuit, 300 feet long, upsizing to #10 THHN for voltage drop, can I use a #12 THHN to satisfy the ground wire in the 20 amp ckt? I've heard mixed answers over the years, I'd like to hear a correct answer. Thanks for your time.
 
Yes, for this circuit the EGC would need to be #10 or in the same size as the ungrounded conductor.
