Saw a underground job that was already done. Talking to one of the men who installed it , he said he used all purpose glue( cement) . Not the kind that’s required for electrical PVC PIPE.He said underground pipe really doesn’t need to be glue it’s only there for protection. Will that glue hold up.Just wondering. They did run THWN WIRE. Thanks for ur opinion.

Good question, I would have to look at a can of PVC glue to see what the instructions are. I used to have the water crew help me and they always wanted to use purple primer

If primer is used before gluing the pipe, it's doubtful that the joint will come loose. Without it, it could.

I’ve installed it both ways. Glued and not glued..
If it’s a short piece between two secured cabinets why bother with glue? Why not?

Water leaking into pipe and maybe coming apart
Do we really care if water gets in the pipe?
For our application they are full because the top is open on the pole.
Ive seen them full of water in the ground with THWN in them. What does it matter.

use pipe with longline couplings. How they going to come apart in the ground?

Seems like water always gets into underground pvc after a few years from what I’ve seen. Always took it to be a lot of the reason it’s considered a wet location for wire rating requirements. If you’re only concerned about it coming apart due to fear of water getting in because of lack of primer, I personally wouldn’t give it too much consideration.

The black stuff for ABS (black sewer pipe) is the wrong solvent combination to work effectively with PVC pipe.
When gluing PVC, the instructions generally indicate that glue alone can be used with zero pressure or low pressure piping, while primer is required for full joint strength for pressure piping. If you are burying pipe in wet weather the primer helps clean mud off the pipe ends.
The network of PVC water pipes across my 1.5 acre yard was installed by the previous owner, and is under 80psi or more pressure (hilly country) and a disconcerting number joints were not properly glued. Some had no glue, some had primer only. I have to dig up about two joints a year when a puddle of water shows up.
A very different environment from electrical conduit.
