Use of UL with the NEC

From reading the different posts here lately, especially listed/classified circuit breakers and other equipment and wiring methods I have a question.
How many people here (on this forum) use the General Information for Electrical Equipment (UL) Directory for cross reference as well as the NEC? As well as the other UL directories.

Re: Use of UL with the NEC

I use the white book.
I've got to admit I don't understand how to cross reference the tags in the field and the way it's listed in the book.
In fact I'm just now setting up with a UL representative to come to our May IAEI meeting to explain the uses of the book and the CD

Re: Use of UL with the NEC

I refer to UL White Book a lot. When using it on line, I always check the Display Guide Information only box. I have also contacted a UL person to get a PDF file of the White Book. The last revision was posted for a while on Joe Tedesco's web site with a link from this one to that one to download. The PDF file is not online for download.

Re: Use of UL with the NEC

Same here. I use different UL directories (white, green, and orange books) pretty much every week.

I have a follow up question:
Referring to 680.7 and 680.22(A)(1), and the definition of receptacle in both Article 100 and the UL White Book, would you permit the use of a cord connection for the pool pump with a male (attachment plug) plugged into a female cord cap (cord connector)? ( the prior example is usually accomplished with the 'Woodhead Boots') As opposed to a male cord cap (attachment plug) plugged into a 'receptacle' mounted in a box. ( a cord and attachment plug, plugged into a receptacle)

My response is not a direct answer to your question, but I have a question.

How would you have a female cord cap to connect the pump to with out violating 400.8(4) and possibly 400.8(1)?

Re: Use of UL with the NEC

Hello Bob and Ryan
Here is what is permitted to be installed in our jurisdiction. I am curious based on my question and your references what you think.

From the pool pump motor 18 inches of cord with an attachment plug (1/2 of the Woodhead boot). From a box, 18 inches of cord and a cord connector (female end) and the other 1/2 of the
Woodhead boot. As far as Art 400, they reference 400.8
I am saying this is not permittd, because the NEC calls for a receptacle, not a cord connector (female connection to the cord). What do you permit for this type of pool installation? Mike Holt and the NFPA Handbook both have illustrations showing a receptacle and not cord connection on the female side (supply side)

Re: Use of UL with the NEC

Pierre I agree with you a cord connector is not a receptacle.

But more than that I do not see where the code allows the use of a cord connected to a box for this application.

210.50(B) Cord Connections. A receptacle outlet shall be installed wherever flexible cords with attachment plugs are used. Where flexible cords are permitted to be permanently connected, receptacles shall be permitted to be omitted for such cords.
There are few instances I know of where this is allowed.

368.8(B) Bussways.

410.30(B)Adjustable Luminaires

There may be more that I missed.

In this area many inspectors will not allow a cord drop directly from a box citing 400.8(1)

We will put a box with an outlet and the cord will plug into that, a strain relief is installed and this is the drop.

We may put a female cord cap on the end of that at a convenient height.
