A friend of mine is concerned (overly I think) over control wires for a generator. He has a new house with power lines out to the genny location, but no control wires were run. He bought a used 16 k generac and a Briggs and Stratton ATS. The manuel says to run 16-5 control wire. I told him as did another electrician that 18-5 is fine. (with 300 volt insulation). He's very handy and wants to do it himself. To confuse him further a Generac tech told him he can't use 18 gauge because it's 240 volt, and that he runs a 14-3 and a 14-2 romex, (makes no sense to me). Any one think there is any issue with 18 gauge wire with 300 volt insulation?
