Uses Not Permitted for Extension Cords

I am looking for a specific code that will help me with a case. Can an extension cord be ran from a building on the ground, across a claiche (rock) drive that is approximately 50' and be attached to a block heater in an inboard/outboard motor during the winter months (approximately 4 months). Probably 75'-100' of extension cord would be needed. The driveway is heavily used and the cord would be exposed. I am trying to find a code that will show this is not acceptable. Any help is greatly appreciated, my case is this coming Monday. Thanks, John

Re: Uses Not Permitted for Extension Cords

Article 400 deals with cord usage. 400.7(A) lists the allowable uses.
#11 is for temporary usage, but it must comply with 527.4(B) &(C).
527.4 (B) tells us the temporary usage cannot exceed 90 days.
527.4(C) allows it's use for emergencies and test purposes.
400.7(A) is clear that ONLY those usages are allowed, so I would say it will be there too long to qualify.
Also, 400.3 says the cord used must be suitable for the conditions of use and location. Make sure the cord used is at least of "Extra hard usage" and "Wet locations", and "Portable" type designation. Looking at Table 400.4 only types SEW, SOW, STW, STOW and STOOW match your needs.

But, I would still install permanent UG wiring most of the way out to the boat motor. It would become a maintaince problem for the driveway crossing, I don't think it would last the season.

Since you only have four months of winter, I am assuming you are in the southern half of the US, so snow may not be a problem. Here in the north the snow and ice (especially plowing) would destroy an extension cord.

That sounds like an incident waiting to happen.

Better to figure out a buried or overhead cabling system.

How many years will this cord be needed?

Is it on your own property?
