My associate and I met up with a homeowner to go over the details of a low voltage bid. Over the course of the conversation, the homeowner mentioned that he was going to specify an LED trim for his recessed cans in the house. Interested, I asked to see what he had.

Apparently, this LED manufacturer has a compatibility sheet listing many incandescent recessed can housings that the trims can be installed in.

Do you think these trims are UL classified for use in those housings?

Cree also appears to make their own housings, I think I will suggest to the homeowner that he stick to those to avoid any question. However, since the trims are $80 - $100 a pop, I bet he'll want to cheap out on the housings (this source has them for $15, he can snag a Halo from HD for $8, if memory serves).

The whole idea of using a different brand trim on another manufacturers can has been done for years. I guess some inspectors may call you on it. I prefer to keep the parts from the same manufacturer. Halo's H7 cans cost me about $8.00 and will take a Halo LED trim. Check out Halo's site
