can anybody here explain to me what they would use an analog meter for?

It's easier for the brain to quickly discern the movement of a needle as compared to interpreting the meaning of digits. And in comparisons, such as whether a measured value increaes or decreases.
Look at automotive instrument gauges. For example, a drag-race driver can more easily determine when reaching a shift point watching a tachometer needle than a 3- or 4-segment digital readout.
