A job requires to remove existing 3-phase 240VAC service and replace with single phase 240VAC. An exiting 3-phase 800 amp GE SKHA breaker is in place. Due to location of the new single phase 600 amp service, a new 600 amp fused safety disconnect will be installed and provide over current protection prior to the existing 800 amp SKHA breaker.. A local inspector feels that using the fused 600 amp disconnect will meet code. I agree with him, but is it the proper way to complete the install.

Thanks

Nothing prohibits lower overcurrent protection ahead of a higher rated device. For new construction it may not make much sense, but to deal with something existing sometimes you do what seems best for the situation.
