Using lights as raceway

Correct me if im wrong but i have to install 8 8' florecent in tandem. I can use #12 and feed through each fixture via a chase nipple. Or cant i? 2008 code cycle in nyc

You're not using the fixtures as a raceway if you're connecting them to the branch circuit.
