The part of the test that most people fail is the hands on pratical section. I would recomend reviewing the transformer hook up and motor controls.

The transformer hookup is a 480 to 208/120 Y connection. Remember that the proctor wants the 480 volt colors to be brown, orange, yellow. I have had students that have failed the transformer hook up due to using brown, yellow, purple to mark the 480 volt phases.

Also the motor control question will more than likely be a forward reverse using 2 separate motor starters, not a forward reverse starter, so I would pratice that.

On the switching portion of the pratical exam be sure to ohm out all the switches. There will be some bad switches in the pile you have to choose from so make sure your meter has good batteries. I heard of one student fail the switching due to his meter not working and he couldn't ring the switches and ran out of time.

For the rest of the test, be prepared to do some load calculations, both standard method and optional method for a single family residence. I would also recomend going through UGLY'S book and familarizing yourself with the formulas in that book.

Good Luck with the test.

Hands on test for a jourmenman???(or any license for that matter)! Cool!

Yep, Utah has reinstated the hands on pratical portion of the journymans test. For a while they had went to a computerized pratical test, but have now gone back to a hands on test.

The test is comprized of 5 parts

1. Parts identification
2. Conduit bending
3. Multiple switching project
4. Transformer hook-up
5. Motor control

This is for the standard journeymans test for the residential journeymans test the pratical exam consists of the following parts:

1. Parts identification
2. Conduit bending
3. Multiple switching project
4. Doorbell wiring project

Re:

You might try going to a place where you can study for your JW License.
Forgive me for posting this if anyone thinks I shouldn't post this,,, but,,,

Utah Contractor Center

Prep: 801-968-5865
They offer 2 study courses: Code and Theory, each costs about $210.00.
I hear that there's someone that teaches the practical as it is in the classroom, but I don't know who this is.

Hope this helps.
