This article was caused by the utility company having a transformer failure, and sending(in their words) in excess of 2,000 volts down the secondary of their pole mounted transformer. His house was at the end of the secondary lateral, and received the most damage. Houses closer to the source lost all their appliances, but had no fire. Luckily for the owner, he had good insurance, and expects payment within 30 days. Plenty of litigation to follow.
In this week's issue:
Total loss
Last Thursday turned into a sad day for the owners of a home at 50 East Shore Drive on Iron Lake . The couple, who wish to remain anonymous, lost their home and pet to a fire.
Officer Greg Hunt of the Cambridge Police Department arrived on the scene first and kicked a door in after neighbors said a dog was inside, but the animal was kenneled and unable to escape.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the state fire marshal, said Capt. Daryl Wooster of the Cambridge Fire Department. The house was a total loss, but no dollar estimate has yet been determined.
Firefighters fought heat as well as a poor location in battling the blaze, which was reported at 10:44 a.m. The house is near the end of a narrow lake street, and ingress and egress were difficult.
?It was a bad spot,? said Wooster of the dead-end road, ?and it was definitely warm down there.?
Firefighters appeared physically exhausted after fighting the blaze.
Columbia Township responded by sending the rapid intervention team in case a firefighter became trapped in the blaze.
The Addison, Adrian , Columbia , Clinton , Madison , Manchester and Sand Lake fire departments also responded to the call.
