I'm just curious if NEC provides the requirements on the proper installation of utility-owned transformer/facilities inside the customer premises/building. Or is the installation not allowed in the first place?

Re: utility-owned facilties inside customer premises

An electric utility can install facilities anywhere they need to install them. It depends on where the service point is located as to what Code covers the installation. Normally, the service point is outside the structure. However, in some high rise buildings, our primary conductors are taken to utility floors and terminated there in our transformers. These floors are separated from the other floor by approved firewalls. :D

hi charlie,
thanks for the reply. but further to it, may i know if you are referring to a transformer vault (as prescribed in art. 450.41-48)when you say a utility floor with an approved firewall? and is this an utility requirement regardless of the transformer's insulation? :)

Re: utility-owned facilties inside customer premises

No, I was referring to a chase where primary distribution was taken up to various floors (say the 20th, 40th, and 60th floors) where the floor and ceiling were fire walls and floors. This would create a location where normal transformers could be installed to serve a portion of the building. This is done in large high rise buildings such as in NYC.

What you are talking about is transformer vaults where all of the walls, floors, and ceiling are of fire resistant construction in accordance with Article 450. While this may seem to be inside a building, it is not. It is inside a structure but is considered to be outside a building and the NESC will be applied to the installation of the electric utility's equipment.

Actually, the NESC applies to the first example of electric utility equipment also. :D
