Utility sizing

When the utilitybrings power from the pole to the house, do they use a minimum size for all installations? I.E. Home has a 100A panel, but does the utility bring in 200A or 400A for future upgrades?

If not, does the utility charge for this upgrade?

This is in Newport News, VA.

The poco determines what size wire they install.We have to conform to NEC guidelines but they are exempt :roll:

I contacted the PoCo and they said according to their records that they had a 200A service running to the house, even though there is a 100A panel.

Has anyone found that this is reliable info, or should you have the PoCo come out and verify?
