Vacation time?

Just curious, I have been a foreman with my employer for 5 years now. I use my own personal truck, my own personal cell phone, have no sick time, or vacation time. I am a good employee who really cares about my work and the profit of the jobs I run.

I am going on vacation shortly and I mentioned "banking" some hours so I could be paid while I was gone for a week (i am paid hourly). They didnt like this idea, and told me to head to the owner to ask for straight up vacation time. My answer was a firm no. I asked how many years it would take, and I just got a laugh. I am told that "some" have vacation time.

Am I wrong to be ticked off? I am seriously looking elsewhere for a new job. This feels like a total kick in the gut after putting my heart and soul into this job for so long. I hardly ever ask for things, I guess because I know the answer already.

Please tell me if I am wrong to feel this way!

not wrong

not wrong

No! You are not wrong to feel this way!! If you are taking care of them/him, he should be looking out for you! At least one weeks paid vacation time after 5 years!! I was in this similiar sitiuation once. Do not get mad, just make a simple reminder..."have you overlooked the possibility of some paid time off bossman"? Ask for it, and see the response..then if needed, demand it!:D

I would take 2 weeks....a week of vacation and a week of scouting new jobs.
See what options are out there before pulling the plug.

You need to move on if you can find work. There are plenty of company's that pay well and give good benefits

I get 2 weeks paid vacation, 5 sick days, and x amont of paid holidays, not sure the exact amount, I've had the vacation time since day one, that was 10 years ago, so looks like i'm ready for another week.

In my opinion you are being treated like a doormat.

That said, I agree with Celtic, check your opportunities before moving on.

I think if I was a sub I would feel okay about it all.

I am a "real" employee. Today is my 5th year anniversary in fact, odd that I remember it.

I did ask for it- the answer was no.

Am I being used? Yep. Is there anything else out there? Guess thats the question.

My wife had our baby, I didnt get home until 2 am, but I was at WORK at 7 am. I missed one day of work. They didnt even mention it. I dont know if this is the norm or not, but I felt like I went above and beyond, but guess if they dont care I shouldn't have either.

Stop selling yourself short, they need you alot more than you need them, its an employees market with so many contractors.

What was the deal when you first started working for the company? I've always negotiated my rate and vacation time before being hired.

I started out at $11 an hour and now I am at $32. I really doubt I can find anything that pays near that with all benefits paid. For this kind of money, guys are knocking down their door.

Do you get health insurance? Opps, looks like a yes to that one... :)

I could not disagree more, I think this would be a very poor time to be job hunting. You may find work but it will be at a cut pay. (Heck even Foxwood's is laying off 700)

Yep, fully paid.

When it comes down to it, I get a lot of good things, and I fully admit it. I will also add that work is slowing way down, and the odds of my pay staying what it is, is very short lived. They tell you how tight the job is and that they cant afford to pay you what you were getting.

Its a tough situation and I think if I knew i would keep my level of pay up I would just suck it up. This "my bid was low so your going to get less" is for the birds.

I am trying to find a management spot in a local electrical supply house, or a rep position for anything electrically related for the time being. I fear with a slow down I need to find something more secure as well.

Trust me the pay is not an issue, I feel very very lucky to get what I do. I just dont know day to day if it will last either.

Why would you want to bank hours when it's much safer to bank money?

I'm pretty sure that banking hours is illegal for the employeer and really dumb for the employee. When you get money ahead by working extra hours put it in the bank (mattress) where you know it will be safe. If they won't pay you for vacation then pay yourself. But never, never leave any hours on the books. Get money as soon as possible.

Companies can go bankrupt and you will just end up another debt that they won't pay.
