I'm sure many places have the rules to have vapor boxes on ourside walls. The vapor barrier is sealed to the box, and the insulators put foam where the cable enters the box, like for top/bottom plate penetrations.

My question is what do you do for old work? You cut in a box into the outside wall. Do you seal it in some way? How?

I'll try to answer your question. The energy codes require the vapor barrier & they're relatively new. So, IMO, you don't have to worry about sealing a hole when cutting in a box as you would in new construction. Does this help?

I still wouln't worry about it. If you ask me, it's not a life/health/safety issue. In my town we have a pretty tight energy code, but, chances are very slim we would inspect a little service call like yours :)
