“Overkill to avoid engineering.” I’m stealing that!
I got that from a civil engineer. I had a second story added onto a house I owned once, then got laid off before the contractor could finish the deck I had planned coming off of the master bedroom, 14ft above grade. So I had to design and build it myself while I was looking for my next job. I purposely over designed the supporting structure because I couldn't afford a civil engineer at the time. A year or so later I had a party at my house and the deck looked out over a lake where the July 4th fireworks were going to be (Lake Union in Seattle for those who know that area), so there were going to be about 25 people on that deck. During the BBQ part of the day, I learned that one of my wife's coworker's husband was a civil engineer, so I asked him how he felt about having 25 people on that deck. He looked at it and said I probably had twice as much material and bracing as I needed, declaring it as "overkill to avoid engineering"... I've used that ever since.
