I have a VAV box that has a disconnect visable on the unit factory installed. I am in WA state. I have wired these in the past and always used a approprsitely sized (snap switch Motor rated) in a Raised cover on the top of the unit. Non fused. My foreman thinks that the switch (factory installed is sufficent). I think not, because there will still be power in side the VAV while the switck is off. Please advise Russ

The requirement is to disconnect power for working on the unit. A factory unit switch satisfies this requirement. What code article would you cite to say that an external switch is required?

I side with your foreman. I have worked off of specs that say external, but that is not an NEC requirement.
