Customer with a remote truck scale. They don’t require much power but he wants a small building next to it. 700’ from nearest power. Several of you have suggested step up at source then step down at the other end. Fifteen KVA single phase transformers are special order at 575 volts and $1100 each. Plus fusing & disconnect. I can buy a lot of oversized wire for $3000.
at what point do the transformers become cost efficient?

I would say not until around 1500-2000 feet. IMO the two transformer thing is bad solution:. Losses 24-7 forever, more voltage variation. If I was going to go step up step down, I would go all in to 15kv class with padmounts.
