Just wondering if any body knows of a code reference about bundling wires in a panelboard, loadcenter etc. Whenever I do it and anybody else that I have seen use plastic tie wraps. I was wondering if there was any reason a person could not use velcro instead. Mostly for ease of future additions of new circuits.

Re: velcro

I have seen ties with velcro used on wiring for computers and printers and so forth but I have never seen them used in a panel. I dont know it would be illegal but why would normal plastic wire ties not work?

Re: velcro

Out side of 110.12 I don't think theres anything requiring ties. I guess it would come down to, is there any reason velcro can't be in a panel.
Can't think of one, but velcro is not my specialty ;)

Re: velcro

My thinking on the velcro versus plastic ties is sort of the same on the data cabling thoughts is when something is added later on it will be installed neatly instead of outside of the existing bundle.

Re: velcro

You might consider the quick release plastic wire ties. They are the same as plastic(zip) ties, but can be released quickly. You should be able to find them at a hardware store. That way you can remove them easily in the future and re-use them.

Re: velcro

the reason vdv guys use velcro is not for ease of adding wire to the bundle later but rather because velcro cannot be overtightened and pinch the wire in the bundle. vdv wire is succeptible to degredation when kinked or pinched by a zip tie or a too-tight bend.

within a panel the main advantage to zip ties is that they are narrower and easier to insert in a tight space. they also fit into smaller anchor points than velcro.

other than that no code restrictions that i am aware of.

Re: velcro

Can't think of any code restrictions either. But I can't see how Velcro is any better than ty-raps in a panel. Cut the ty-raps off and install new ones. Just as easy as playing with a Velcro tie as far as I'm concerned.
