In look at 422.51 Older equipment must be plugged into a GFCI outlets, equipment made after 2005 needs it incorporated into the machine or be located with 12 in. of the attachment plug.

So do I understand this correctly that the older equipment has no exceptions to be within 12 in. of the attachment plug?

It just says you have to have GFCI protection for older machines.

Older vending machines manufactured or
remanufactured prior to January 1, 2005, shall be connected
to a GFCI-protected outlet.

I don't understand your question.

The within 12" of the attachment plug refers to a GFCI device installed in the cord itself.

422.51 requires that GFCI protection be provided for all vending machines and states that manufactures must include the GFCI protection on equipment that is manufactured or re-manufactured after January 1st 2005.

If GFCI protection is not provided by the manufacture you must connect the vending machine to a GFCI protected outlet.

I see, if it is not part of the machine it then must be in the cord of the appliance at 12 inches from the plug.
