Vending Machines

In the 2008 NEC does it state that all vending machines that were made or remanufactured prior to January 1, 2005 shall be connected to a GFCI protected outlet. Does that mean a inspector needs to check all existing vending machines in their areas and make sure a owner of the equipment has GFCI protection or does the inspector only check them if they are moved and relocated. I ask because on a college campus half are being replaced for a new vendor contract within 6 months and the other half older than 2005 are being left alone. The college wants to know if the Electricians are stating in the 2008 code all the vending machines need GFCI protection,Period.

This requirement was part of the 2005 NEC, take a look at 422.51. This section was reworded in the 2008 to add to clarify the intent and define the term vending machine.

As far as enforcement of existing vending machines, that would be up the the local AHJ.

Don't forget part of that section also requires GFCI cord sets installed when these units are re-manufactured so the old machines should be getting retrofitted at some point.
