I had a question about fire alarms that I could not find. The question was something like, What is the minimum size wire that you can staple to an exposed surface? 12 14 16 18 Need some help. This is not the exact wording of the question, so i need some help! Thank you!!

The only limitation I could find about exposed wiring is for 3' max.

Could it have been refering to NPLFA circuit conductors (760.27(A)) or PLFA conductor size (760.57)? Perhaps the "stapled to an exposed surface" was erroneous information to throw you off (if so, it worked!)
