When installing a 3/4 or 1” EMT in the wall from a data box at 18”
and stub 90 above the ceiling it’s at least a full stick of pipe. How many supports are required ?
i typically use 2 one from the box 12”- 3’ and then one before the stub 90.
This was a topic of conversation at work and my Forman said only one support 3’ from the box.
I disagree the code states min 3’ from termination point. I say that stub 90 is also a termination and or end of pipe. Just looking for a few other inputs.
thanks

Data box stub-ups are there to provide a pathway from the box to the hung ceiling so they are sleeves. IMO the NEC is silent on the number of supports required.

The NEC may be silent on the number of supports needed for this type of install, but, you'd get an earful from me if you didn't use 2 just like you are already doing.

It's a sign your conscious of the way your work looks, so , good for you.

when i first started the end of the pipe was a termination, in a coupling or not. like you are saying. your 4man is a bozo. unless you drilled a hole in the top and double plate - that would hold the pipe in place.

'Looking for other inputs' is a fine thing, but we don't know the rest of the story.

We don't know what the foreman knows about the job. While we've established that the sleeves don't need the extra support, but that most of us like it, the short version is:

Do it the way your foreman tells you to.

Maybe the bean counter over his head won't let him buy the extra supports. Maybe something else. Then again, maybe they really should get that extra support for workmanship, and he's being an idiot cheapskate. Doesn't matter. You still do it his way.

If the box is securely supported then one support on the sleeve will be adequate. As others have stated just listen to the guy in charge. :)
